entirely true, but exaggerated for comic effect
what I wore in 2010: January

So I’m one month in to this whole year of photographing what I’m wearing, and so far my biggest revelation has been that I wear the same damn thing all the time. Also that I hate winter, at least the kind of winter where it’s cold and there is snow on the ground for more than 48 hours.

I am totally over winter. I am also starting to be a little bit over my skinny jeans and my boots, largely because I’ve worn them every single day for the past month, give or take about three days.

I’m not making that up; you can see for yourself.

February 1

My project for February is to wear pieces that I have not worn yet this year, which will require some cooperation from the weather (because apparently I only own three outfits that are appropriate for actual winter conditions) and some creativity on my part. And by “creativity” I really mean whatever the opposite of laziness is because it’s just so much easier to grab some skinny jeans and a sweater every morning than it is to plan an outfit, especially since I’m typically getting myself dressed while simultaneously helping Henry find clean pants and walking Charlie through the list of places he might have left his belt.

Of course, to kick off the Month of Creative Outfitting, I slogged my way out of bed this morning after three hours sleep and grabbed my skinny jeans and my only turtleneck and the universe’s most trustworthy cardigan sweater. So I guess I can cross that outfit off the list for this month. Only 27 more days to go! Hooray!

So in a nutshell, what I learned in January is that I do not own enough clothes to live in a place where winter does not mean lows in the 50s, and my carefully edited closet could benefit from a pair of boot cut jeans. The end.

Ok, but…. you look really great in them. If that makes you feel any better :)

Okay, but I have to ask…what’s wrong with wearing the same damn thing all the time? That’s what I do, and it definitely saves me money and space on clothes, and energy spent on putting outfits together that almost definitely no one but me will notice. Especially when you’re a busy mom who looks darn good in her skinny jeans to boot (which I am not, but you are).

If it’s a goal of yours to mix up your wardrobe, I’m not criticizing. I’m just asking - why not wear skinny jeans and sweaters all the time, if that’s what you like?

Why do you need to wear something different - just to be different? Even though you might start with the same look each day, you add different touches - scarfs, belts, jewelry, layering etc that mix it up a bit. You’ve found what looks good on you, you’ve found what you like…there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. It’s your style! It’s not as if you wear the EXACT same clothes every day. I worked with a guy once who wore an oxford blue shirt & khakis every single day. At least we knew they weren’t the same shirt & pair of pants every day because he biked to work and kept them all at work! He had a closetful of blue shirts & khakis in his office.
So - do what you want - I’d be interested to see what you come up with but I like your style whether you continue with the same or try something different!

You are doing your own personal Uniform Project. With skinny jeans! And you do look fabulous, regardless.

But I too can’t wait for more fashion-inspiring weather. (As I keep one eye on the weather forecast predicting more! snow! Gah!)

I know what you mean. I live in Minnesota, where we have REAL winter, which means I’ve been wearing jeans (boot-cut, though), long-sleeved t-shirts, cardigans, snow boots, and parkas since November. There is no other option. You cannot go out to the bus stop or walk a child into preschool in pencil skirts, tights, and equestrian-style (read: no traction) boots where I live in January. You look casual and fairly sloppy till spring, THEN you can break out the cropped pants, cute ballet flats, and bare legs.

I have to agree with everyone else, you look fabulous! But I can understand how wearing the same type of thing can start to bug. I blame the pictures. I’m not usually bothered by the fact that I almost exclusively wear long sleeve t-shirts, sweaters, jeans and riding boots. Until I see photos of myself and think “good G-d don’t I ever wear anything else!” It is especially bad when you realize that you definitely have a favorite sweater because it appears in almost every photo taken of you over the holidays. And by “you” of course I mean me and my cream cable knit.

By Jan of every year I am wearing the same outfit almost everyday. Not the same clothes but identical pieces. My girls label this as the “uniform”. if thats not boring then I dont know what is.

Gah! I am too, so sick of wearing the same thing. It has been a combo of the weather and some enforced shut in on my account. Since I work out of the house, I often go days without dressing for a meeting, etc. if there is not a reason to venture out. I do make an effort each day not to lounge in sweats, etc. just to keep up appearances!

Hang on - I’d been looking at your daily photos and you never wore the same top twice! I was wondering if you kept your wardrobe in a barn out the back.
