I took Charlie to the ER yesterday. Because it seemed like a fun thing to do on a Friday afternoon. Oh and also because he was BLEEDING all over my kitchen floor.
Sheesh.

Welcome to 2009!
When I talked to Chris last night, I told her that I was SURE the emergency room was going to call CPS on me. First of all, this is our second visit to this particular ER (remember the broken arm? oh yeah) and our third ER visit in the last little while. She said that in her area, three is the magic number. I was glad we’d gone to two different emergency rooms.
Oh and also glad that this particular ER was so inept when we were there for the broken arm that they STILL don’t have that incident in the computer system. Excellent!

Charlie smashed into the basketball goal in our driveway; he and Henry were racing. He cut the back of his head and then apparently bounced off and slid across the driveway; he took all the skin off one finger, from the cuticle to the knuckle, and completely destroyed his glasses. He also dinged up his face, which made sense since he apparently landed on it. In the driveway.
Good lord.
I did not actually see the incident; I was in the kitchen, tidying up before my neighbor and her kids came to play. When the boys came inside — Charlie screaming and bleeding and Henry announcing, “CHARLIE FELL DOWN! AND HIT HIS HEAD!” — I called her and said, “Hey, playdate is off. We’re going to the ER.”
And she said, “Send Henry over here.” We are NEVER moving. EVER. Because despite the fact that this is the second time I have needed her help with the kid who is NOT going to the ER, she’s still my friend. Amazing.
In the end, Charlie is fine — no stitches, no concussion, nothing broken. Wade took care of all the bloody parts of him, which was super because I am NOT good with blood. At all. And do you know what really REALLY bleeds when you cut it? YOUR HEAD.
Or Charlie’s head, as the case may be.
Today we are all fine; Charlie is back to his cute little boy self and the blood is all cleaned up. And we have all decided that there will be NO MORE TRIPS TO THE ER in 2009.
I hope.

We had something like our sixth trip to the ER with Jason this last Wednesday night…oh and then we called to come back in to the ER for a CT scan after the radiologist looked at the xrays and didn’t like what he saw on Thursday.
I swear that child has had more than his fair share and I’m always afraid they are going to think we are abusing the kids.
The time before last, Jason went for a busted head–and oh dear lord did it bleed and freak me out!
This time it was a fall on the playground–thank goodness, so at least the school was able to confirm that his neck started hurting at school. He has whiplash. IT’S AWESOME.

On our most recent trip to the ER, the nurse explained to us (calmly)that there is always a lot of blood with head or face injuries. Which info still didn’t keep me from almost passing out…

I just read Tony Hawk, the skateboarder’s autobiography. (It was for a project, shut up!). He was a tiny kid who LOVED to skateboard and who was always racking himself up, complete with blood and broken bones. He said it got so the ER people would send in a social worker to quiz him about whether his folks were feeding and/or beating him, so battered, bruised and tiny was he.

Glad everything is ok! That is a scary moment when they come in crying/screaming and gushing blood.
Now that will be $800 please.

switching ER’s is key. Except for certain injuries social services comes anyway. Like the vitamin incident. But I think that was also because it was during business hours. They never seem to come for blood.
