We’re home from vacation (more on that later) and I cannot tell you how happy I was to fall into my own bed the other night. I take my bed for granted when we’re home — it’s just a bed, after all — but when I’ve been away, I’m always glad to be back between my own sheets. Go figure.
I spent a long time yesterday unpacking, which always leads to cleaning out my closet, which is odd, I know. But my bedroom is a kind of safe space for me, away from the stress of the day; we don’t have a television or a phone in our bedroom, because I read years ago that people with insomnia (hello!) should ban those things from their sleeping space. I have a big pile of magazines and books next to my side of the bed, and an old school alarm clock without a snooze button, and some delicious hand lotion that smells like chocolate. Ahh.
It’s good to be home.
In the last installment of BlogHer’s Putting it All Together video series, Rhoda from Southern Hospitality and Sabrina of Slice of Lemon sit down with Ree to talk about decorating the bed and bath. Their photos of the Lodge at Ree’s ranch are stunning, of course. Take a peek, at their pictures and the video.
And then share your tips for making your bed and bath feel like home.

You know, it’s funny. I DO have a phone in our bedroom, although the ringer is permanently turned off–I think it’s more there for the potential emergency situation when you need to call 911 from your bed in the middle of the night? Which, come to think of it–Good Lord! THAT’S not a restful idea!
And last winter I moved a small TV into the bedroom as well, after 15 years of married life with no TV in the bedroom. But the elliptical is in there as well (I know! Gah! It’s hideous. But we don’t have a basement and there is NO OTHER PLACE for it), and Lord knows in the winter when I’m exercising inside I need a TV.
But I have to say, I LOVE having a TV in the bedroom. I love cozying up in my bed at night with a book and the remote. Lame, I know.
Anyway, all this is to say that while elements of my bedroom may not seem restful or serene, I love our master bedroom. It’s a sanctuary for me, and I love reading and relaxing there. It’s in all cool blue and white and feels so tranquil.

We have his-and-hers tall bookshelves on either side of our bed, next to our bedside tables, which contain lamps that put out SERIOUS wattage. Reading in bed is so relaxing, and having a whole big bookshelf of wonderfulness to choose from makes me happy….
because nothing else about our bedroom says “haven.” Our room is unnaturally huge and thus becomes a repository for all the CRAP in our house, including the giant rowing machine and ironing board. When I’m staring at at a book, however, I don’t see the mess.
