We had dinner last night with our friends Miles and Molly, to celebrate Twelfth Night. Molly makes a special cake each year, a coconut pound cake; she bakes it in a bundt pan designed to look like a cathedral. It’s delicious, and beautiful. Last night she was lamenting that she didn’t have any powdered sugar, to make it look like it snowed, and we all said, yes yes, now SERVE THE DELICIOUS CAKE. Please!
It really WAS delicious. It still is, in fact; I just had a piece. Perhaps my second today. You never know.
Molly also made the Advent wreath on the table, out of live greens. As I was taking the picture, Miles said, “Molly is the Martha Stewart of Twelfth Night.” Absolutely.
Today I was feeling inspired by Molly’s creativity, and also a little relieved that we FINALLY got all the Christmas decorations put away, and when we got everything packed up, I lit some candles and put some Bach on the stereo and made a cup of tea. And then Charlie got all his plastic dinosaurs out and dumped them on the floor and said, “Can we listen to some rock and roll?” and so we changed the cd and played dinosaurs for a long time.
Yesterday on NPR, I learned what happens when you fall into a black hole: your body is pulled apart until you are no more than streams of atoms moving through time and space–imagine water pouring through a colander. The proper scientific term for this is “spaghettification.” I love that, for so many reasons. I think I’ve been feeling a little spaghettified lately, what with one thing and another. Apparently I just needed some coconut pound cake and some candles.

I need an Epiphany/Twelfth Night tradition. Perhaps a cathedral pan would be a good place to start! I’ll have to add it to my list of Baking Pans I Want, which already includes a pumpkin-shaped pan and one that makes A TRAIN (both from Williams Sonoma).

I love that you had time to play dinosaurs. My mantra seems to be “in a minute…” and I never quite get around to playing. Bravo, Susan!
(P.S. Okay we just finished a dinner party with serious amounts of wine so I’m not sure if I can do the word verificaton. Wish me luck.)

Wow, I wonder where she got that fantastic bundt pan?

Rocks,
I got that same bundt pan at Marshalls, of all places, for 9.99. They have lots of different bundt pans at our local Marshalls, but you have to grab the ones you want when you can, because there are usually one one or two of each form.

Any chance she might share her magic coconut cake recipe? My mouth is watering.

That sounds so good.
I envy people who can do things like that. I can bake but have no creativity at all.

I want all those cool bundt pans. Williams Sonoma has a ton of really neat ones but I’m sure they can be found elsewhere for much less money.
As for the powdered sugar, I saw on Rachael Ray this week that you can put regular sugar in a coffee grinder and it will magically powder up. Since your friend is all Martha-Stewarty, maybe that would come in handy sometime.

What a lovely tradition. It looks like a special bundt pan, I’ll have to see if I can track one down online.
Also, ha! Spaghettification. Love it.

I tried to read you post but I kept looking and rereading about the coconut pound cake… is her recipe a secret or will she share? Sounds DIIIIVINE.

No fair posting pictures of food like that if you’re not planning to share.
Do you have any leftovers that you could send me when you get re-spaghettified?

That cake is beautiful!
Spaghettification is an awesome word!

Oh I totally need that cake pan too. Sort of like the last hurrah for the Christmas season.
Instead we had Miles’s birthday cake, you know a month late. Maybe that could be our tradition though it might end up costing way more in therapy than the cake pan…

I scored several of these type bundt pans at Ross last month. One in particular was still on sale at Macy’s for $35. I got it for $8. Gotta love Ross.
By the way, I made a chocolate cake (mix) with peppermint ganache (okay, really microwaved choc. frosting with Starbucks peppermint syrup because I was lazy) and starlight mints around the base. It really was nothing special, but everyone raved–I think mostly because it looked fancy. Everyone asked for the recipe, but I was too embarrased to tell them. So now they think it’s even more special because I am keeping the recipe to myself. Presentation is important!

I feel spaghettified as well. Definitely feel torn in about a million ways. And while I’m impressed at celebrating 12 Night (what is that?) I bet your friend isn’t half as fabulous as you are.

I heard that spaghettification story too - that was amazing. Hmm, yes, I would say the holidays basically spaghettified me as well.
