On Friday night, we kicked off the summer with Movie Night at my neighbors’. But this wasn’t any old movie night; they set up a full-size movie screen in the back yard and we ate pizza and watched Star Wars with the kids. Well, the kids spent most of their time having light saber fights and high-fiving each other because they were still up! at 10:00 pm! watching Darth Vader! woo! But that was most of the fun.
I feel like Friday night set the tone for our summer. We’re going to do fun things this summer, and I’m not going to worry so much about bedtime or sugar or staying clean. Promise.
Charlie has been dying to plant our flower bed; he wanted to pick out the flowers himself, so I took him to the nursery and turned him loose in the “full sun” section. We came home with a flat full of various colors and types of flowers, but my favorites are these snapdragons.
We also baked a cake, because what’s a holiday without cake? I was lobbying for cupcakes, because cupcakes are the new cake, but my kids are Old School and really really wanted a cake. So that’s what we made, and it was delicious.

We used an easy peasy buttercream icing recipe from Magnolia. As we were making it, Henry said, “That is a lot of sugar.” That wasn’t a complaint, though. Oh no no.
On Saturday morning, Charlie climbed in bed with me, snuggled up close, and announced, “The pool opens today!” Then he sighed and said, “This is the best summer ever.”
Just wait, son. Just wait.

Love that bubble pic!! I just took some of my kids blowing giant bubbles in the yard..I need to go back and see if I captured anything like that!
I know exactly what you mean, we had a great family cookout today and this weekend has set the tone.. I don’t think I have ever been so excited about summer arriving. I have lots of plans for us this year!

What a great plan - and perfect timing. Your kids are right at the age my best summer memories were created. (Well, and then again at the end of my teens.) I look forward to living vicariously.

Boy does that cake look goooood. And it doesn’t help that I am currently starving from running 5 miles earlier today.
We have some friends who, prior to our parenting days, used to host Outdoor Movie Nights at their house, projecting onto the side of their garage behind the house. We all used to sit out there in camp chairs and eat outdoor food and drink alcohol and stay up late. Since having babies, Outdoor Movie Night has pretty much become a thing of the past, though maybe when our girls are all Henry’s and Charlie’s ages, they’ll start anew. One can hope.

oh the hope! I don’t know how long your summer lasts, but mine is weeks and weeks away. So I shall watch yours while making copious notes.
We are having a practice run this week with half term. I have to say, it’s going so-so.

What an amazing picture!
I am looking forward to summer and am also a little terrified of it. But a positive attitude is the way to start off right! I’m going to get myself one.
