Today is the boys’ last day of school until December 1; apparently, Catholics believe that the celebration of Thanksgiving needs to last AN ENTIRE WEEK and cannot include going to school for ANY PART OF THAT WEEK.
Hmm.
This morning I got up eeeeeaaaaarly (eh, what else is new) so that I could do an interview with USA Radio’s Daybreak USA show. If I had any idea at all how to find the clip, I would share it with you, but I’ve got nothing.
I was talking about turkey, though, just in case you’re wondering.
To make this even better, while I was talking turkey with the nice radio host, I was also COOKING a turkey, for Charlie’s kindergarten class. I somehow got the idea that I would be cooking a little breast, which seemed odd considering that there are forty kids in kindergarten at Charlie’s school, but maybe the kids weren’t really going to EAT the turkey, and a turkey breast is far and away the simplest form of poultry to make, so I didn’t complain. Anyway, I had planned to cook the whole thing this morning, in between my 7:20 interview and a 10:30 conference call.
Because honestly, once you stick the bird in the oven, you’re done. It’s not that hard.
Yesterday morning when I dropped Charlie off, his teacher met me with a grocery bag containing a fifteen pound Butterball. And I died a little because that was NOT part of my plan.
Fortunately, I have a convection oven (I know! Awesome!) which meant that I could still cook the turkey this morning, WHILE doing the interview where I talked about the Butterball Turkey Talk-Line.
I am GOOD.
(I would also like to note here that the ENTIRE prep time for the roasting of this particular turkey was 19 minutes from start to finish, which INCLUDED looking up the directions for roasting a turkey in a convection oven AND washing all the dishes afterward. SO. VERY. EASY.)
In between cooking the turkey and delivering it to school, Wade emailed me to say that he had heard from a friend that I am in the November issue of Oklahoma Magazine, in an article titled “75 Great Oklahoma Websites.” I actually knew about this but had forgotten, because when you’re a big rock star like me, it’s hard to keep track of all these media appearances.
(Excuse my while I lay down here and laugh at that. Actually I forgot because I haven’t slept since September and my brain is slowly rotting away.)
Here’s some irony for you: the magazine photo was taken by a very nice professional photographer, while the turkey picture was taken by Charlie’s even nicer kindergarten teacher. Frankly, I like the turkey picture better. Because I’m a big crazy narcissist rock star. OF COURSE.
(A big thank you to Heather Sleightholm for the truly lovely profile she wrote, and to Brent Fuchs for the terrific photo. You all make me look good, and these days I need all the help I can get.)

Susan - I love your site and your turkey tips! Every time I read your posts you remind me that there are other cool people in OKC. Sometimes I feel so alone ;)(j/k, but really)
P.s. I think both pics are great!

It’s the coat…that’s why it’s a better pic! Just kidding. I like it better because it is more real…the keys in your hand, the turkey just unwrapped. I think every mother probably has a picture like this (maybe not with a turkey, but something.)
But your gorgeous in both!

First of all, I LURVE the coat (I know I’ve said this before, but it’s worth repeating). Second, that’s SO cool that you were featured in the mag. First and probably only time I’ll ever read something from their publication, what with my having nothing else to do with OK, but this was totally worth it. Great work!

You make it look so effortless, even though I’m certain it was not. Fabulous! Fabulous!

You are adorable and the coat is fantastic. And somehow you even look graceful perched on that itty bitty kindergarten chair.

I love both pictures! In the first one, you look adorable and you could not have picked a better coat! In the magazine picture, you look ready to take on the world! Congratulations!

You look gorgeous in both, but I also like the first one a wee bit better. It has to be that gorgeous coat we convinced you to buy. Congrats on the magazine feature.
Susan says: You know, the screen shot in the article is the post about how I bought the pea coat … see, it’s DESTINY.

Could you share how to cook a turkey in a convection oven? We moved into a house with one and I’m still trying to figure out how it works!

You forgot to mention that whilst roasting and being interviewed and conference calling you talked to ME and we solved the internet marketing problems of THE WORLD.
(And she stayed perfectly focused and ON POINT, people.)

Growing up in SE Oklahoma, we always had the whole week of Thanksgiving out of school. I thought it was because of deer season an “all the boys would miss school anyway, so why not close the school” type of thing. Maybe the real reason is that the school district administrators were Catholic!
Great pics. The coat is so cute!
