entirely true, but exaggerated for comic effect
I will name him Rainbow Sparklepants

Actual phone call with my mother.

Her: Hello! Where are you?

Me: At the grocery. We need food that is not pizza.

Her: Good idea. Daddy is getting a FedEx package ready to send you, for your birthday.

Me: Yay!

Her: You’ll have to sign for it.

Me: It’s a puppy!

Her: Daddy says to tell you it’s a pony.

Me: Even better! I always wanted a pony — who knew I would have to wait until my 40s to get one?

Her: Right. Are you going to be home in the morning?

Me: If there’s a pony coming, yes I will be.

Her: Okay, Daddy is going to have them deliver this before 10:00 am. You’ll have to sign for the pony.

Me: Of course.

Her: Put him in the backyard. Then call Rita and tell her to bring the kids over.

Me: Right.

Her: Daddy says he loves you.

Me: I love him too!

Her: Call us when the pony gets there.

Me: OH I WILL.

Now I’m really curious, because if it’s NOT a pony, it’s going to have to be BETTER than a pony…

Seriously I’m going to laugh my ass off if it’s anything even *resembling* a pony.

I love that you still call your Daddy Daddy. I still call my Daddy Daddy too. I think I will ALWAYS call my Daddy Daddy.

Yay, a pony! Your mom sounds so cute. And that sounds weird, but you get the idea.

aw. i LOVE it. a pony! and your mother = adorable.

Eagerly awaiting the update tomorrow!

Your parents = adorable. I know nothing of this, but I think it sounds delightful.

Also, your birthday present seems so completely exciting, do tell us all about the pony.

Happy Birthday!! Hope your day is great.

I can totally see having this conversation with my mom….

Happy Birthday!~

Damn, she ruined the surprise.

Happy Birthday, anyway!

That is super sweet. Assuming it wasn’t totally sarcastic. Also. Happy Birthday! I am glad you are here.

Happy Birthday Susan!!
I loved your phone conversation. I always called my Daddy that too!

I hope it’s an extra special pony for an extra special girl! :)

Enjoy your suprise!

No, don’t call them call me so I can get a ride! :o)

Perhaps the pony will be purple with a mane and tail of pink. Or, pink pony with a mane and tail of purple! I smile just imagining it.

Ha! Cracking me up. And its clear where you get your sense of humor. :)

Happy Birthday!!

Happy birthday, Susan!

A comment from someone from your mother’s generation: Today was our son’s birthday…his 34th! It gets harder each year to hold onto the illusion of even middle age! And totally worth it for the jooy of knowing how well he turned out! I’m sure your parents also feel that way….even if there isn’t a pony!

Okay, how did the extra “o” get in joy?

adorable conversation! :) happy birthday!

Makes me want to call my mom!

A pony is 25 pounds sterling, if you are a comedy cockney gangster.

Still, not too shoddy….

I just laughed so hard, I got coffee up my nose. So where’s the pony?!

Thanks for sharing this fun story. My daddy passed away 2 weeks ago and this sounds like exactly like something he and my mom would have done. He loved birthdays and surprises and sending packages. You brought a much needed smile to my face this morning!

P.S. Although I’m an adult, I still refer to him as Daddy as well, LOVE IT!

Are you sure it’s a pony and not a mini-horse? Or a foal? I always get those things mixed up. I love your mom. I hope I’m sarcastic when I get older.

So…. it is well past 10 am! Was it a pony?

Having seen your Flickr photos, I can say that you’re right about the ’sparklepants’ part LOL

Have a fabulous birthday Susan! You are so awesome, such a great inspiration to so many, and well, just so damn cool! I hope it’s a fantastic day for you!

So, instead of a pony, you got a kid with croup… not THAT’s a horse of a different color. Bahahaha : )
