After three days of juggling a sad, sick kid and gigantic pile of work, I woke this morning to two! healthy! children!
And a severe winter storm. I cannot get a break over here.
(Actually, that’s only half true — Oklahoma City public schools were all closed today, but my kids are at school until after lunch. So I’ve got that going for me.)

I will probably wear these pants all weekend.
We’ve known for days that this storm was coming, but yesterday it was sunny and 65 degrees, which makes it really really hard to actually believe that by tonight we will be totally iced in. And possibly without power! Hooray!
Also, dammit.
I went to the grocery on Tuesday night, and got all provisioned. And then Charlie and I went again yesterday because we were completely out of batteries and candles and half and half.
What?!? It’s an emergency! I need half and half!
Oddly, there wasn’t any half and half to be had, only non-dairy creamer (uh, no) and whipping cream. I went with the whipping cream, figuring I could mix it with milk and make my own half and half. So far, I’ve just been dumping it in my coffee straight. It’s delicious, but if this goes on for too long, I’m going to need a bypass.
(Also, please explain to me why half and half is a storm-related staple. Bread I understand, but half and half? Weird.)
This morning I woke up and realized that a frozen pizza and three loaves of bread were probably not the best food options for the next three days, so I went back to the grocery and got real food (still no half and half! and today no whipping cream, either — weird, I tell you). Of course, in the checkout line I realized that if our power goes out, I have no way to actually prepare any of this food; I would have been better off sticking with the bread and just making pb&j sandwiches.
Wade’s office is closing at noon; he’s going to bring the kids home. We have movies and snacks and hopefully enough alcohol to get through two days of Enforced Family Togetherness (oh who am I kidding, there’s not enough alcohol in the world for that). I’m all cozied up in the cashmere yoga pants I scored from Rita, which are the Best Thing Ever (though when I sit on our mohair sofa, the static charge from the pants could light up most of my neighborhood).
((That could come in handy if the power goes out, now that I think about it …))

I LOVE the cashmere pants! I don’t think I would ever need another pair of pants again if I had those.
Sorry you might be stuck at home. We’ve been having nasty winter weather here, too. I’m running out of things to do to keep everyone occupied.

I bought 4 boxes of cereal and a gallon of milk. So if the power goes out, we’re good. If the power stays on, then I’m lucky enough to have enough food to last us about 5 days.
And plenty of booze, of course.

Given that we live in hurricane heaven, I always insist on a gas stove, I can cook if we have power or not. If the natural gas is knocked out, we have camping stoves to use. When the hurricane hit us this last time, we used our charcoal grill and our camping stoves in conjunction with the gas stove/oven so we were eating like kings (had to use everything up before it went bad) even though we weren’t sleeping AT ALL because it was miserably hot.
Those pants are inspiring me to change out of my current clothes and into jammies!

Weird about the half and half. Now I’m wondering what all those people are preparing for!
Also? I seriously think this is the greatest hair color I’ve seen on you. Just thought you’d like to know

This post made me laugh out loud. Although I’d rather
1)cry
2)curl up in bed without ANY of the kids
3)drink (ok. I’m sort of lush-y now…)
I thought checking out some blogs would help cheer me up.
THIS is the kind of post I was waiting for.
Welcome back.
PS REAL women use half and half, not milk. Glad to hear that it’s a staple Stateside too!!

This is really funny, b/c this morning I finally caved and went to the store to get half-and-half. Because I had been making do with FAT-FREE HALF-AND-HALF for two weeks, because strangely enough it is the only half-and-half that the Target in my town carries and so out of desperation I had bought some awhile back when I was at Target and did NOT want to make a separate trip to the grocery store for the real thing. I’m sure I don’t have to tell you that fat-free “half-and-half” is NOT TASTY.
Oh by the way, this same problem (no half-and-half) also happened to me over Christmas, and I ALSO CHOSE TO USE WHIPPING CREAM MIXED WITH MILK TO MAKE MY OWN HALF-AND-HALF. And I too sometimes just skipped the milk part.
Yum!

**Ahem** let it be known that those pants fit MUCH snugger on the neighbor girl.
Also, they made her itch.
The pants are much happier over there on your teeny little bottom.

I want snow! And to hang at Susan’s house. Instead of wine and cheese, I can bring half and half! DC HAS A SURPLUS.

Half-n-half is an emergency staple because if you get iced in, you have to make your own damn latte.
PS — I sometimes buy heavy cream and use it for a week in my coffee. Heaven!

You mean I spent my entire Tuesday afternoon running all over Tulsa looking for a generator and I could have just picked up a mohair sofa and a pair of cashmere pants? Always the last to know.

LOL- you totally made me laugh with the comment about your pants’ static lighting up the hood.
Hope you guys are staying warm. We’ve just been bundled up, eating lots of fried egg sandwiches (I may need that bypass too!). I can’t wait for spring!!!!!!!

The half and half was gone because, *I am so sorry*, I bought it all. I mean, I have no problem being home for days at a time with my kids plus a few neighbor ones as long as I have my coffe with cream. So sorry, won’t be such a pig next time.
