grace in small things: thirty three

After lunch today, Charlie was eating a Fig Newman* cookie; he took a big bite and chewed thoughtfully and then looked at the filling in the remaining half. “I love these,” he said, “but what’s inside them? Is that chocolate?”

“No,” I said, “it’s figs.”

“Oh. What’s a fig?” So I explained figs, which reminded me of this time that Wade and I had figs for dinner in Santa Fe, which got me thinking about the best things I’ve eaten.

Which lead to this list. Enjoy!

1. Figs and Pigs, Cafe Pasqual’s, Santa Fe, NM. Figs, wrapped in bacon! You cannot go wrong with bacon.

2. Lamb chops and garlic mashed potatoes, Cafe Campagne, Seattle. Best mashed potatoes ever. Seriously.

3. The house salad at Cafe 501 in Edmond, Oklahoma. Always delicious.

4. Carne adovada at The Shed in Albuquerque, New Mexico. So hot my lips hurt for the rest of the afternoon.

5. Boston Cream Pie at my mother-in-law’s house. The real reason I will never leave Wade.

Have I mentioned that my parents lived in Edmond?
We need to have an Edmond-food convo.

Love Cafe 501. Love Edmond. Your blog makes me miss my hometown. :)

If my kids ever think to ask what’s inside fig newtons I will panic and lie and tell them it’s chocolate. If they think it is anything fruit or vegetable related, they will throw it down in disgust and walk away, no matter how much they love the taste. Maybe I should call them Fib Newtons. That was bad, sorry, I need to go have some coffee and collect myself.

My husband and I loved Cafe Pasqual’s so much we bought the cookbook when we left! No figs and pigs recipe, though! Love your blog -

We make bacon wrapped dates. And they are stuffed with parmesan cheese. It is a little bite of heaven.
